As the United States’ stance on marijuana evolves, the use of marijuana, whether for medicinal or recreational purposes, is becoming more and more prevalent and accessible. Whether you are someone who did not pursue cannabis prior to its state-by-state legalization, now you might find it’s an option for you. Or, if you are someone who used marijuana during prohibition, you might be discovering a whole new world of designer cannabis and cannabis products now open to you. 

The world of cannabis is changing every day. As legalization continues to grow and expand, more and more people are able to find the strain or edible that’s just right for them and their situation. We can now explore cannabis in our downtime and during our playtime. Others are finding ways in which pot helps with focus, productivity, and creativity. People now have the freedom to explore new and evolving pain management options, as well as applications to assist with mental health. 

The world of cannabis is vast. It may be confusing, especially if you are new to cannabis as a consumer. If you have questions and are not sure where to go for the answers, we’re here to help. This post is the first in a series for the Cannabis Beginner. Below are terms we think will be helpful to you as you begin your journey into the world of cannabis. 

Please know, as there are so many more terms out there, this post is only the beginning. If you have a term or a question about cannabis - whatever it is - let us know, and we’ll include the answer in a future post!

Beginner Cannabis Terms & Definitions

1. Cannabis: The scientific name for the plant commonly known as marijuana. It is used both recreationally and for medicinal purposes.

2. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol): The psychoactive compound in cannabis that produces the "high" or euphoria associated with marijuana use.

3. CBD (Cannabidiol): A non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis, known for its potential therapeutic effects without causing a high.

4. Indica: One of the two main types of cannabis plants, known for its relaxing and sedative effects. Often used for nighttime use. 

5. Sativa: The other main type of cannabis plant, known for its energizing and uplifting effects. Often used during the day.

6. Hybrid: A cannabis strain that is a cross between indica and sativa plants, combining characteristics of both types.

7. Terpenes: Aromatic compounds found in cannabis and other plants that contribute to the plant's flavor and aroma. They may also have therapeutic effects.

8. Bud/Flower: The dried and cured flowers of the cannabis plant, which contain the highest, naturally occurring concentration of cannabinoids.

9. Edibles: Cannabis-infused food products, such as brownies or gummies, that provide an alternative way to consume cannabinoids.

10. THC/CBD Ratio: The ratio of THC to CBD in a cannabis product, which can affect the overall experience and potential therapeutic benefits.
